Many of you know that last night was the Kickoff BBQ for our church. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's our welcome back event geared toward students and to introduce them to our weekly meal that we do. In preparation for the event we had an aggressive ad campaign to let people know about the BBQ. We printed up 5,000 fliers for the event, sent 2,500 to have them in dorm rooms as people moved in, gave away many of them at our Garage Sale, passed out over 1,000 at the Info Fair, and still have more left over. We did word of mouth invitations, posted about it on many different blogs, and even ran an ad on
Facebook to be sent to anyone in the KU group.
We had no idea what to expect for the event so we were prepared. I have to admit though, I was disappointed with the results. We did have a dozen or so new people show up, but they were all personal invitations and already knew people in our church. I was puzzled by the fact that no one showed up as a result of our marketing blitz.
I was talking to Sean about it last night, and there are things we continually learn, and things that we'll change for next time. The one thing we did come away with is this, it's not about the flier, or the promotion, but rather, what's important are the personal relationships that we are making in our community. It's funny how we knew that going into this, but we still tried to do it our way. It's funny how God has a way of refocusing us on what's important. I just hope we will remember this in the future.
Later,
David
